Emma's Story

Created by Kevin 15 years ago
Emma was to be Kevin and Sandra Krumwiede's 3rd child after her oldest brother Ian of 3 years and sister Anna of 16 months. From the beginning, she challenged the family to adjust their lives. First, the notion of adjusting the workload, home setup and finances to accommodate 3 children who would all be under 4 when Emma was born was daunting. Sandra and Kevin focused on the positives of having another beautiful child in the family with plenty of love and support from extended family and friends. But during the 2nd trimester of Sandra's pregnancy, Emma surprised them again. She would be born with Down's Syndrome with a new set of challenges to absorb. Again, the Krumiwede's adjusted their view of the future to include the challenges that might come with such a condition and again prepared themselves to bring her into their lives with the love and support she would need. The next challenge was a congenital heart condition known as an AV Canal defect which was essentially a hole in Emma's heart that would require heart surgery at 3-4 months of age. The doctors described the good news that the problem could be fixed and she would live a normal life after recovering from surgery. However, the final hurdle came in Sandra's 31st week of her pregnancy in the form of Fetal Hydrops. The doctors ruled out two of the main treatable causes which left the likely cause to be her chromosomal condition, which would not be treatable. By week 33, Sandra was showing signs of discomfort including significant additional amniotic fluid, fatigue and other concerning signs that the baby's condition could begin affecting her. The doctors recommended inducing labor to give Emma the best chance and avoid complications for Sandra. Sandra began induction on April 17th and by 4am on April 18th, Emma and her little heart were motionless in Sandra's womb. Sandra gave birth to Emma's body and she and Kevin held her and kissed her goodbye. Emma will be remembered and honored by her immediate family and extended family including Grandfather Glenn Krumwiede, Nanna Carmi Krumwiede, Grandmother Joann Krumwiede, and Grandfather Jairo Estevez-Breton and her aunts and uncles, Andrea, David, Adriana, Edgar, Kim and all of her cousins. The entire family takes comfort knowing that she is in the care of God and in the company of Sandra’s mother, her Grandma Gloria.
